In a notable shift for the New York Islanders, head coach Patrick Roy has expressed a strong commitment to incorporating advanced statistics into his coaching strategies. Roy's emphasis on analytics was evident in his debut game with the team, a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday.
Addressing the media, Roy emphasized the importance of utilizing advanced stats to identify areas where the Islanders need improvement. "To some level, it doesn't lie," he asserted. "We're in the bottom of the league with breakouts, we're bottom of the league in puck possession in our own zone, we're bottom of the league in puck possession in the [offensive] zone. There's some work to be done."
Although Roy has access to private data, the publicly available analytics paint a concerning picture for the Islanders. They have experienced a decline in defensive structure under former coach Lane Lambert, resulting in goaltender Ilya Sorokin facing an unusually high number of shots compared to other goaltenders in the league.
Shoring up the team's defensive zone has become a top priority for Roy. "We're gonna start to worry about our defense," he stated. Roy believes that a strong emphasis on breakout plays will help the team spend less time in their own zone, ultimately minimizing turnovers and scoring chances for the opposition. "Most of the time, turnovers become a pretty good scoring chance," he warned.
While Roy doesn't plan to completely overhaul the team's systems overnight, he intends to implement minor adjustments to enhance their defensive game. Drawing inspiration from his coaching experience with the Colorado Avalanche from 2013 to 2016, Roy explained, "If I was looking at analytics then, our team was giving up a lot of puck possession in the D-zone. I've been thinking about what I want to do for the last seven years, so I do believe in what I'll try to bring here."
Having successfully implemented similar strategies while coaching the QMJHL Quebec Remparts, Roy is optimistic about replicating that success at the NHL level. "It was a very good learning lesson for me," he reflected. "Fortunately for me, I had the chance to do it with junior guys. It worked really well, and I do believe it's gonna be the same thing at the NHL level."
As the Islanders look to improve their defensive game under Roy's guidance, fans and analysts eagerly await the results of this analytical approach. With a renewed focus on advanced statistics, Roy aims to transform the Islanders into a formidable defensive force once again.
