In a potentially costly mix-up, Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander nearly handed the Carolina Panthers an extra possession during Sunday's game. Alexander's miscommunication during the coin toss could have given the Panthers an advantage in both the first and third quarters.

After winning the coin toss, Alexander informed referee Alex Kemp that the Packers wanted to be on defense. However, Kemp, likely recognizing the potential error, sought clarification from Alexander before accepting that the Packers were deferring their choice.

Fortunately for the Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur had previously informed the officials of their intention to defer during a pre-game meeting. This proactive approach may have contributed to Kemp's efforts to clear up the confusion caused by Alexander's statement. Had the Panthers gained an additional possession in a game that ended with a close 33-30 score, the outcome could have been different.

Following the game, Alexander seemed unconcerned about his mistake, stating, "I said, 'I want our defense to be out there,' and they all looked at me like I was crazy. I mean, it's pretty simple what I said, like I want the defense to be out there. They were like, 'You mean defer?' and I'm like, 'Yeah, I guess.'"

Coach LaFleur, on the other hand, was more forthright about Alexander's blunder, describing it as a "big mistake." LaFleur emphasized the importance of reviewing such instructions with the team before every game, ensuring they are aware of the decision to defer after winning the toss. He also noted that precautions were taken due to a similar incident earlier this season, highlighting the team's commitment to being proactive in avoiding such errors.

It remains unclear why Alexander, who hasn't played since early November, was serving as a team captain on Sunday. Coach LaFleur declined to provide a clear answer when questioned about Alexander's captaincy, simply responding with a noncommittal "Yeah."

It is yet to be seen whether Alexander will retain his captaincy moving forward, as the mix-up during the coin toss could have had significant repercussions for the team. However, it is likely that the Packers coaching staff will work with Alexander to ensure a clearer communication of their intentions in future games, especially when it comes to the crucial coin toss.
