After a heated meeting with Tyronn Lue and the Clippers front office, P.J. Tucker finds himself stuck in a frustrating situation. The veteran forward, who had hoped for a trade to a playoff-bound team, remains with the Clippers despite his desire to play elsewhere.
Tucker, who was included as salary ballast in the James Harden trade, expressed his dissatisfaction with his current status. In an interview with Tomer Azarly of clutchpoints.com, Tucker made it clear that he did not ask to be with the Clippers and did not demand a trade to be there.
"I shouldn't have to endure this sitting when I want to play somewhere," Tucker stated, highlighting his frustration.
The 12-year NBA veteran's hopes for a trade were dashed as the deadline came and went without any deal materializing. With an $11.5 million contract for next season, a buyout was also not a viable option for Tucker.
As a result, Tucker finds himself in a precarious position, away from the team alongside guard Bones Hyland. Both players are expected to rejoin the Clippers after the All-Star break. This separation comes after Lue, in an attempt to find effective rotations, benched Tucker early in the season and never gave him another chance.
Despite his frustration, Tucker remains resolute in his approach. When asked if he had ever requested a trade from his previous team, the Philadelphia 76ers, Tucker adamantly responded with a "no." He believes that he has already proven himself in the league and should not have to endure being sidelined.
In the short term, there seems to be no immediate solution for Tucker's predicament. It is unlikely that he will find himself back in the rotation, and it remains uncertain if the Clippers can trade him in the summer, possibly as part of a larger deal. The hope for Tucker lies in the fact that he will become an expiring contract, making a potential buyout more attractive to other teams.
For now, Tucker will have to watch the games from the sidelines, a challenging pill to swallow for an NBA champion and seasoned veteran. The frustration continues to grow as Tucker awaits a resolution to his unwanted situation with the Clippers.
