In a press conference on Monday, Oregon coach Dan Lanning addressed the rumors surrounding his potential candidacy for the coaching vacancy at Texas A&M. Lanning made it clear that he has no intention of leaving the Ducks, stating that there is "zero chance" of him coaching somewhere else.
Lanning, who is currently in his second year at Oregon, had emerged as a possible top target for Texas A&M following the firing of coach Jimbo Fisher. However, Lanning's recent contract extension and his commitment to the program have put an end to the speculation.
In July, Oregon awarded Lanning with a one-year extension through the 2028 season, along with a significant raise to $7 million per year. The contract also included a substantial buyout of $20 million, should Lanning choose to leave the program.
During the press conference, Lanning expressed his satisfaction with the resources and support provided by Oregon. He emphasized that everything he desires as a coach can be found within the program, insisting that he has "unfinished business" with the Ducks.
Lanning, 37, has had a successful tenure at Oregon thus far, compiling a 19-4 record in his second season. The Ducks currently hold the sixth spot in the College Football Playoff rankings and are second in the Pac-12 standings.
While three of Oregon's previous four coaches have voluntarily departed for other coaching positions, Lanning made it clear that he will not be joining their ranks. He praised the commitment shown by the university to compete for championships and expressed gratitude for the support provided to him and his family.
"A lot of coaches... don't say anything, one, because they don't want egg on their face when they decide to do something else; two, because they're concerned about things that I'm not concerned about, like getting a better contract," Lanning stated. "I'm taken care of extremely well here at Oregon. I have the resources I need here to be really, really successful."
With Lanning's commitment to the Ducks, the program can continue to build on their recent success under his leadership. Oregon fans can now look forward to a stable coaching situation and the pursuit of championship aspirations under Lanning's guidance.
As the season progresses, Lanning and the Ducks will continue their push for a College Football Playoff berth, while Lanning himself looks to solidify his position as one of the rising coaching stars in college football.
