Atlanta Hawks center Onyeka Okongwu has reached an agreement on a four-year, $62 million contract extension, according to his agent Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management. The deal was finalized just before the 6 p.m. ET deadline, making Okongwu the 14th and final player from the 2020 NBA draft class to secure a rookie scale extension.
Okongwu, who was selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, showcased his skills and impact on the court during his rookie season. He averaged 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Hawks in the last season, with consistent performances that included double-figure scoring in 13 of his final 15 regular-season games.
Known for his offensive rebounding prowess, Okongwu demonstrated his value to the team, ranking in the top five of offensive rebounding percentage and second-chance points under Hawks coach Quin Snyder. His contributions were recognized by the organization, leading to the lucrative contract extension.
While Okongwu's contract extension brings good news for the Hawks, the team was unable to reach a rookie contract extension with forward Saddiq Bey. He is now set to enter restricted free agency next summer, along with several other rising stars in the league such as Immanuel Quickley of the New York Knicks, Patrick Williams of the Chicago Bulls, Obi Toppin of the Indiana Pacers, and James Wiseman of the Detroit Pistons.
The Atlanta Hawks organization is looking forward to building upon the successes of last season as they aim to continue their ascent in the Eastern Conference. With Okongwu's long-term commitment, they secure a talented and promising player who will be a crucial part of their future plans. The fans eagerly anticipate watching Okongwu's growth and development as he solidifies his place within the team's roster.
As the NBA offseason unfolds, fans and analysts will closely monitor the upcoming restricted free agency period and how it will shape the league's landscape heading into the new season.
