Ronnie Caldwell, a junior safety hailing from Cedar Park, TX, had been playing with an injury but remained committed to the team by traveling and assisting the coaching staff. His sudden death is currently under investigation by the Natchitoches Police Department.

Notably, the university has accepted the resignation of Brad Laird, who had served as the head coach of the Demons football team for six seasons. Citing the emotional burden caused by Caldwell's loss, Laird expressed his inability to dedicate himself fully to the players and the program. Reflecting on his relationship with the team, he said, "Any coach will tell you that their players become like family, so the loss of Ronnie was like losing a son. I love this program and this university, and I know it will persevere and move forward with the competitive spirit that is at the core of our DNA."

Kevin Bostian, NSU's athletic director, acknowledged Brad Laird's significant contributions to Northwestern State football, stating, "We appreciate Coach Laird's long-term investment in Northwestern State football. From his undergraduate career as a record-setting quarterback to his various roles within the university, he has been an integral part of the team." In the wake of Coach Laird's resignation, Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Weston Glaser will serve as the interim head coach while the athletic department begins an immediate search for a new head coach.
