Almost as soon as he returned to the lineup, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was forced to exit again due to a devastating knee injury. During the team's Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Jones suffered a non-contact knee injury on the first play of the second quarter. Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Monday that Jones had sustained a season-ending torn ACL in the 30-9 loss.
Jones attempted to escape pressure behind the line of scrimmage but went down in pain. He briefly tried to walk to the huddle or the sideline but ultimately collapsed back to the ground. Upon entering the medical tent, Jones managed to walk to the locker room with the assistance of trainers. However, at the start of the third quarter, it was announced that Jones would be ruled out for the remainder of the game and subsequently, the rest of the season.
Prior to this injury, Jones had already missed the Giants' previous three games due to a neck injury he suffered in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins. He was replaced by Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito during his absence. Unfortunately, Taylor also landed on injured reserve earlier this week due to a rib injury, leaving DeVito as the primary backup.
Against the Raiders on Sunday, undrafted rookie DeVito stepped in and completed 15 of his 20 passes for 175 yards, throwing a touchdown pass but also two interceptions.
Jones has faced significant struggles this season, experiencing a regression in performance compared to last year. Before his injury in Week 9, he had completed 68.9% of his passes with an average of only 5.9 yards per attempt, which is a career low. Additionally, his interception rate of 4.0% was the highest of his career, and he had been sacked on 15.6% of his dropbacks, nearly twice his career average. In the six games he played in 2023, Jones managed only two touchdown passes while throwing six interceptions.
While injuries along the offensive line may have contributed to his decline, Jones has struggled even when provided with opportunities to succeed. Unfortunately, the 2023 season has now come to a premature end for him following a four-year, $160 million contract he signed with the Giants in the offseason.
The Giants will now rely on DeVito to lead the team in Jones' absence as they seek to navigate the remainder of the season without their starting quarterback.
