In an effort to strengthen their offensive unit, Nebraska has made significant changes to their coaching staff. According to a team source, the Cornhuskers have hired Glenn Thomas from the Pittsburgh Steelers to serve as quarterbacks coach, while shifting offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield to work with the tight ends.
Glenn Thomas, 46, brings a wealth of experience to Nebraska, having previously worked with head coach Matt Rhule at Baylor as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2017 to 2019, as well as at Temple before that. Thomas has also served as the offensive coordinator at Arizona State in 2022 and coordinated the offense at UNLV in 2020 and 2021. In addition, he coached quarterbacks at both UNLV and Arizona State.
The addition of Thomas is expected to have a major impact on Nebraska's offense. With over 20 years of college and professional coaching experience, Thomas has proven his ability to develop quarterbacks, having previously worked with the Atlanta Falcons and played a role in the development of NFL quarterback Matt Ryan. This is a crucial asset for Nebraska, as they welcome true freshmen Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin to their roster, alongside returning scholarship player Heinrich Haarberg.
Nebraska's offensive struggles in the 2023 season have been well-documented, as they averaged only 18 points per game, ranking 123rd nationally. Their passing attack, hindered by injuries to quarterbacks and receivers, finished with fewer yards per game than Iowa, Navy, Army, and Air Force. The addition of Thomas is aimed at addressing these issues and providing a much-needed boost to their offensive production.
As a result of Thomas' arrival, Marcus Satterfield will transition to coaching the tight ends. This move allows Satterfield to focus on strategy and game plans, while benefiting from a group of tight ends strengthened by the return of Thomas Fidone, a receiving threat, and the addition of four-star signee Carter Nelson. It was initially Rhule's plan to have Satterfield work with the tight ends, but he assumed responsibility for the quarterbacks last year. Now, with Thomas on board, Satterfield can fully dedicate himself to his new role.
Josh Martin, who served as Nebraska's tight ends coach in 2023, will return to an analyst position. This change comes after Martin's time as an analyst during the offseason last year, which was followed by Bob Wager's resignation in July.
With the addition of Glenn Thomas and the strategic shuffling of coaching responsibilities, Nebraska is hoping to revitalize their offense and improve upon their underwhelming performance in the previous season. Fans will eagerly await the impact of these changes as the Cornhuskers prepare for the upcoming football campaign.
