The auction house Sotheby's confirmed that this sale establishes a new global record for game-worn sneakers.

Dubbed "The Dynasty Collection," the set of sneakers included Air Jordan VI (1991), Air Jordan VII (1992), Air Jordan VIII (1993), Air Jordan XI (1996), Air Jordan XII (1997), and Air Jordan XIV (1998). Interestingly, only one pair of each championship sneaker was sold.

The significance of these sneakers lies in their unique history. Before the 1991 NBA Finals, Tim Halland, the executive director of PR for the Chicago Bulls, made a request to Jordan. He asked for one of Jordan's game-worn Air Jordan shoes if the team were to emerge victorious. Jordan fulfilled the request and even signed and inscribed the shoe, starting a tradition that continued for the other five championships. Sotheby's obtained these sneakers from a Private American Collector who had received them from Halland.

Accompanying the sneakers were a set of limited photographs depicting a jubilant Jordan wearing just one sneaker after his triumphant NBA Finals victories. The collection also serves as a reminder of Jordan's remarkable comeback to the basketball scene. Following a brief departure from the game to pursue a career in professional baseball in October 1993, Jordan made a stylish return in March 1995. He led the Chicago Bulls to the most successful regular season in NBA history, with an impressive 72 wins.

Michael Jordan's extraordinary abilities on the court earned him the nickname "Air Jordan" due to his unmatched leaping skills and acrobatic maneuvers. Over the years, the Air Jordan line has become highly sought-after by sneaker enthusiasts, with a booming resale market for his signature range.

This is not the first time a pair of Jordan's sneakers has commanded a mind-boggling price at auction. In 2020, a pair of his iconic black and red Air Jordan 13s, worn by Jordan during Game 2 of his final NBA championship in 1988, sold for $2.2 million at Sotheby's in New York. Recently, in October 2021, a pair of red and white Nike Air Ships sneakers, donned by Jordan during his rookie season with the Bulls in November 1984, fetched an impressive $1.47 million at auction.

The sale of Michael Jordan's championship sneakers showcases the enduring legacy and immense value placed on iconic sports memorabilia. As fans and collectors continue to admire and appreciate the impact of Jordan's basketball career, his game-worn sneakers remain highly coveted and highly prized possessions.
