LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo have emerged as the top vote-getters in the first round of All-Star voting, according to the NBA's recent announcement. Antetokounmpo claimed the leading overall vote, with a staggering 2.1 million votes, while James secured more than 2 million votes, solidifying his record-breaking 20th All-Star selection, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
In the Eastern Conference frontcourt, Antetokounmpo was joined by Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, who secured the second-place spot with 1.84 million votes. Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum followed closely behind in third place with 1.77 million votes. Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler trailed in fourth place with 767,913 votes, while Jaylen Brown of the Celtics rounded out the top five with 426,589 votes.
Out West, James dominated the frontcourt voting, along with Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, who amassed 1.81 million votes, and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, who garnered 1.64 million votes. Lakers center Anthony Davis secured the fourth spot with 988,255 votes, while LA Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard clinched fifth place with 669,320 votes.
Moving to the backcourt, Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton emerged as a breakout star this season, earning nearly 1.4 million votes and positioning himself to start the All-Star Game held in Indianapolis next month. Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard followed in second place with 955,751 votes, while Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young secured third place with 873,979 votes. Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell and 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey rounded out the top five with 624,819 and 480,062 votes, respectively.
In the Western Conference backcourt, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors emerged as the leading vote-getters, both surpassing 1 million votes. Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander secured third place with 966,927 votes, followed by Clippers guard James Harden with 435,951 votes, and Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving with 388,170 votes.
It is important to note that fan voting holds a 50% weightage in determining the All-Star starters, while media voting accounts for 25%, and NBA players' votes hold the remaining 25%. The starting lineup will consist of three frontcourt players and two backcourt players from each conference, with coaches selecting the reserves.
The next round of All-Star voting results is scheduled to be released on January 11. Additionally, the NBA has announced a return to the classic East vs. West format for this year's All-Star Game, discarding the captain-picking format used since 2018. Last season, Antetokounmpo and James were the leading vote-getters and respective captains, with Antetokounmpo's team emerging victorious with a 184-175 win over Team LeBron in Utah.
