The Los Angeles Lakers (17-17) are gearing up to host the Miami Heat (19-14) at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles tonight, marking the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Lakers will be seeking redemption after their narrow 108-107 loss to the Heat back on November 6 in South Florida. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Pacific time and will be broadcasted on Spectrum SportsNet.
As the Lakers return to their home court, they find themselves with the second fewest number of home games played in the Western Conference this season, having competed in only 15 games at Crypto.com Arena. Despite this, the Lakers have managed to win 11 of those 15 games, demonstrating their strength in front of the home crowd. Nevertheless, the team has recently faced two losses since December 18, falling to the Knicks and Celtics.
After a grueling travel schedule in December that saw the Lakers play 10 games away from California, January brings a much-needed respite with a season-high 10 home games. Additionally, the Lakers will have the advantage of familiar surroundings and the absence of extensive travel, allowing them to utilize their own resources and get the much-needed practice time. The team understands the importance of this upcoming home stand and aims to turn around their performance in the standings.
"Very important," expressed Lakers' star Anthony Davis. "We've been a pretty good home team thus far, and now we gotta take advantage of it. The road has been very brutal for us. Now we get to sleep in our own beds and don't have to worry about the travel, use our own resources. We get some practice time in and let guys get healthy. It's going to be big for us to make this home stand a great one, and we gotta take advantage of it for sure."
Furthermore, the Lakers have had a challenging schedule in terms of back-to-back games, leading the Western Conference with seven such contests. However, in January, the Lakers will not have a back-to-back game until the 29th and 30th when they face the Rockets and Hawks respectively, providing them with an opportunity to recharge and establish a rhythm.
LeBron James emphasized the importance of the team maintaining their focus despite being at home, recognizing that opponents will be determined to challenge them regardless of the location. "We have to understand that just because we're home, we can't relax," James remarked. "At the end of the day, we still have to go out and compete, because teams are going to come into our building looking to do the same thing they've been doing with us being on the road."
Looking ahead, the Lakers' schedule eases up in March, with only one back-to-back set of games towards the end of the month (March 26-27). The final back-to-back of the season will take place on April 2nd and 3rd.
Despite winning the In-Season Tournament, the Lakers' recent performance has been less than stellar, with a record of 3-8 in their last 11 games. A major contributing factor has been the team's defensive struggles. In their first 23 games, the Lakers allowed an average of 112.0 points per game, but since then, that number has risen to 120.5 points per game. Opponents' shooting percentages have also increased, with the Lakers conceding a higher rate of field goals, including three-pointers.
Lakers star Anthony Davis acknowledged the need for improved communication and attention to defensive details. "As far as the defensive end, our communication has to be better," Davis stated. "Those are the little details that can win or lose you a basketball game."
Tonight's matchup against the Miami Heat will present a significant challenge for the Lakers, as the Heat have remained undefeated this season when shooting better than their opponents. In fact, the Heat hold an impressive 15-0 record under such circumstances. The absence of players like Rui Hachimura (calf strain) and potentially D'Angelo Russell (tailbone contusion) could further complicate matters for the Lakers.
LeBron James reflected on the team's injury woes and the need to overcome adversity. "There are a lot of great teams in this league, a lot of teams jockeying for position. We just have to figure it out," James stated.
As the Lakers brace themselves for a crucial home stand in January, they will look to re-establish their dominance and get back on track both offensively and defensively. The matchup against the Miami Heat presents an opportunity for the Lakers to showcase their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
