In an exciting turn of events, the Kentucky basketball program has secured its first five-star commitment in the Class of 2024. Highly-touted combo guard, Boogie Fland, hailing from Archbishop Stepinac in New York, has chosen the Wildcats over Alabama and Indiana.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 170 pounds, Fland has earned his reputation as one of the top prospects in his class. He is currently ranked No. 20 overall and is recognized as the second-best combo guard according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Fland joins Somto Cyril, a four-star Overtime Elite center, as Kentucky's only other pledge for the Class of 2024. Cyril is currently ranked No. 52 overall.
While Kentucky had a slower start to the recruiting cycle, head coach John Calipari and his staff were determined to turn the tide. Prior to Fland's commitment, other schools such as Duke, North Carolina, and Missouri had already secured two five-star recruits. Meanwhile, programs like Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Kansas, Indiana, Miami, and even Rutgers had each landed one top-tier prospect.
Calipari left no stone unturned in his pursuit of Fland. The young guard took an official visit to Lexington on September 8, followed by visits from Calipari himself on September 13, September 19, and October 2. It was evident that the Wildcats were fully committed to securing Fland's signature.
So, what exactly does Kentucky basketball gain in Boogie Fland? They acquire one of the most explosive scoring threats in his class. Fland is known for his ability to heat up quickly and his knack for converting tough shots. While he could work on shot selection and consistency, his shooting prowess cannot be denied. Additionally, Fland showcases high energy on defense, frequently disrupting opponents and forcing turnovers. Last season at Stepinac, he averaged an impressive 18.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. On the Nike grassroots circuit, Fland continued to excel, averaging 15 points, 3.8 boards, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 steals. He even had two games where he scored over 30 points.
With Fland's commitment, Kentucky may have just ignited a recruiting momentum. The Wildcats are set to host Jayden Quaintance, the seventh-ranked player in the Class of 2024, for a visit next weekend. Additionally, they are eyeing Karter Knox, a small forward who recently trimmed his options to Kentucky, Louisville, South Florida, and the G League Ignite. Billy Richmond, a talented wing with a final four of Alabama, LSU, Memphis, and Kentucky, is also nearing his decision. Furthermore, top in-state prospect, Travis Perry, who falls within the top 100 nationally, recently visited Rupp Arena during Big Blue Madness.
During SEC Media Day, Coach Calipari emphasized the impact of his new assistant, Chuck Martin, who previously worked with him during their successful tenure at Memphis. Calipari expressed excitement about Martin's influence on recruiting for the Class of 2024 and the anticipated strength of the Class of 2025. Kentucky has already hosted six of the top 20 players for the Class of 2025, including Cameron Boozer (No. 2), Cayden Boozer (No. 17), Darryn Peterson (No. 3), Caleb Wilson (No. 5), Darius Acuff Jr. (No. 11), and Jasper Johnson (No. 13). It is evident that Calipari's recruiting prowess persists, and Kentucky is poised for continued success.
As the Wildcats secure their first five-star commitment in the Class of 2024 with Boogie Fland, expectations continue to rise. With an influx of top-tier talent on the horizon, Kentucky basketball remains a force to be reckoned with in the collegiate basketball landscape.
