In a thrilling finale to their 2023 season, the K-State Wildcats emerged victorious in the Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The Wildcats, with a final record of 9-4, showcased their prowess on the field and demonstrated why 2024 is poised to be a special year for the team.
Head coach Chris Klieman expressed his excitement for the future, stating, "2024 is going to be a special year." Standing confidently on the victor's stage, Coach Klieman commended the team for clinching their third consecutive ninth victory.
A standout performance came from the young and talented quarterback, Jacob Johnson, who displayed remarkable maturity beyond his years. Hailing from Wichita, Kansas, Johnson joined K-State as the nation's top-rated dual-threat quarterback, and he lived up to the hype throughout the season.
Reflecting on his college journey, Johnson shared, "There've been a lot of ups and downs and a lot of learning. I'm so happy I chose Kansas State. They truly do care about you, and it truly is a brotherhood and a family." His exceptional decision-making was evident in the bowl game, as he made smart moves such as throwing the ball away when receivers were covered and maintaining a sack-free passing performance with 31 attempts.
Johnson's leadership was on full display during a crucial drive that solidified the Wildcats' victory. With K-State leading 21-19 after three quarters, Johnson orchestrated a 15-play, 72-yard charge that consumed over 7 minutes of gameplay. The drive featured a fourth-down conversion and culminated in a perfectly executed 11-yard touchdown pass to receiver Allen Brown, expanding the Wildcats' lead.
The K-State defense also played a pivotal role in securing the win. Following Johnson's touchdown pass, K-State cornerback Jacob Smith intercepted a pass from NC State quarterback Brennan Armstrong on the subsequent play, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.
The electrifying atmosphere in the stadium was a testament to the team's dedication and the support of their loyal fans. The K-State Marching Band echoed the celebration with their rendition of "Happy Trails," while chants of "We want Pop-Tarts" erupted from the stands.
For the K-State seniors, this victory was an emotional culmination of their collegiate careers. Tanner Beebe, a leader on the team, expressed his love for K-State and the determination to finish strong: "K-State is my family, and I never wanted to leave them hanging."
On the other side, NC State experienced a heartbreaking end to their season, falling just short of capturing their second 10-win season in program history. Despite the defeat, the Wolfpack's tight end, Trent Pennix, provided a standout moment with a spectacular 60-yard touchdown run from punt formation.
As the K-State Wildcats revel in their remarkable season finale, the stage is set for an even more promising 2024 campaign. With Johnson's exceptional talent and the team's camaraderie, the Wildcats are poised to achieve new heights and continue their winning ways.
