In a swift response to recent social media callouts, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones wasted no time in expressing his thoughts towards contender Tom Aspinall. Despite just undergoing elbow surgery, Jones took to Instagram and Twitter to address Aspinall's repeated calls for a title fight with him.
Aspinall, who claimed the interim UFC heavyweight title during Jones' absence, has been vocal about his desire to unify the belts instead of rescheduling the fight with former champion Stipe Miocic. Taking to TikTok, Aspinall posted a video indicating his willingness to wait for decades for a bout with Jones, ultimately catching the attention of the legendary fighter.
Jones, known as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, responded with a now-deleted Instagram post, where he pointed out that he only recognized four names on Aspinall's resume. Dismissing the TikTok attacks, Jones emphasized that they held no value while he was on the injury list, stating, "You get no points for that where I'm from."
Continuing his response on Twitter, Jones mocked Aspinall's rise to fame, writing, "Only four recognizable opponents, and already the king of England, must be nice. There will be legendary tales told about you and your infamous call outs."
Jones further scoffed at Aspinall's supposed frustration over waiting for a chance to unify the titles, reminding him that he became a champion at the young age of 23. Jones expressed his unfamiliarity with 90% of Aspinall's resume, asserting his own status of headlining UFC events throughout his career.
This was the first direct response from Jones to Aspinall, who secured an interim title fight against Sergei Pavlovich in a short-notice bout last November. Aspinall had previously expressed his desire to face Jones someday, but his recent callouts have become more intense.
While Aspinall managed to get a response from Miocic, who stated that the delay in booking the Jones fight was not caused by him, the UFC CEO Dana White has consistently stated that the organization has no intention of altering their plans. Jones is still slated to face Miocic once he recovers from his injury, while Aspinall may find himself paired with a different opponent in the meantime.
Aspinall responded to Jones' remarks on Tuesday morning, attempting to justify his callouts by acknowledging Jones' superior resume and stating that he wants to beat him precisely because he is regarded as the best fighter ever.
It remains to be seen how this verbal exchange between Jones and Aspinall will unravel. However, fans are eagerly awaiting Jones' return to the Octagon, where he will defend his title against Miocic, while Aspinall aims to continue climbing the ranks in pursuit of facing the legendary champion.
