Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is facing a potential setback in his playing career as he has been diagnosed with a displaced flap of the meniscus in his left knee, according to reports from The Athletic's Shams Charania and Joe Vardon. This type of tear in the meniscus may require surgery, prompting discussions among Embiid, his doctors, and the 76ers on the best course of action.
Embiid's health concerns came to light on January 27 when he was a late scratch from the game against the Denver Nuggets due to left knee soreness. He subsequently missed the team's next game against the Portland Trail Blazers but made a return on January 30 against the Golden State Warriors.
Despite his return, it was clear that Embiid was still struggling with his left knee. In fact, he left the game early in the first quarter to tend to the injury and later returned but appeared to be bothered by it throughout the game. The 29-year-old finished the game with 14 points on 5-of-18 shooting.
During the game against the Warriors, Embiid suffered another alarming incident when Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on his left knee while diving for a loose ball. This further exacerbated concerns about the severity of Embiid's injury.
The 76ers announced on Thursday that an MRI confirmed an injury to the lateral meniscus in Embiid's left knee. As a result, Embiid will be sidelined over the weekend while the team finalizes a treatment plan.
At this point, the team and Embiid are considering whether rest and rehabilitation will be sufficient or if surgery will be required. The latter option would entail an extended absence from the court for the talented center.
Embiid's health is of utmost importance to the 76ers, as he has been a pivotal player for the team this season. As the NBA's leading scorer, his absence would undoubtedly be felt on both ends of the court.
The 76ers will continue to monitor Embiid's condition closely and make a decision that prioritizes his long-term health and future contributions to the team. The outcome of these discussions will determine the next steps in Embiid's treatment and any potential impact on his availability going forward.
