In an exciting announcement, Steve Mayer, the NHL chief content officer, has revealed that the upcoming Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game between the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers on February 17, 2024, will be brimming with New Jersey flair and entertainment. As MetLife Stadium transforms into Stadium Series Park, fans are encouraged to arrive early to experience a plethora of attractions.
Mayer expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the Devils as the true home team for the first time, embracing the essence of New Jersey. The state's well-known parks, such as Liberty State Park, Branch Brook Park in Newark, and Biertuempfel Park in Union, inspired the incorporation of green spaces, amphitheaters, street hockey rinks, and scenic walking areas within the event.
To further amplify the New Jersey theme, iconic New Jersey bands like The Jonas Brothers and The Gaslight Anthem will be performing live. Fans can also expect appearances by local celebrities. The organizers aim to celebrate the state's distinctive culture throughout the festivities.
The Stadium Series goes beyond a single game this year, with the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders squaring off the following day at the same venue. With this expanded schedule, Mayer emphasizes that the event will be the largest outdoor gathering the NHL has ever undertaken.
Over 130,000 tickets have already been sold for this two-day extravaganza, and a limited number remain for each game. Both the Flyers and the Rangers have significant experience playing in outdoor games, while the Devils and the Islanders will each participate in their second outdoor game. The last time the Rangers and the Islanders faced off in such a setting was during the 2014 Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium.
As far as the weather is concerned, Mayer expressed his excitement for what he calls a "perfect" forecast of 30 degrees Fahrenheit and clear skies. While a slight snowfall would enhance the ambiance, it is currently not predicted. Regardless, fans are encouraged to arrive early and engage in tailgating activities, tapping into the vibrant culture of New Jersey sports events.
The pregame festivities in MetLife Stadium Parking Lot G will offer fans an array of hockey attractions from 2:30-6:30 p.m. ET on February 17 and from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. ET the following day. The highlight of the evening will be a live concert by the Jonas Brothers at 6:30 p.m. ET before the Devils and Flyers take the ice. Additionally, The Gaslight Anthem will perform during the first intermission and play their hit song "Howl," the Devils' goal song, after any New Jersey goal.
Mayer praised MetLife Stadium as an excellent venue for hosting an outdoor hockey game, citing its exceptional sightlines and viewing experience. The higher seating levels in the stadium offer surprisingly advantageous views, debunking the myth that closer is always better.
As the NHL aims to captivate the passionate fans of the Devils, Flyers, Rangers, and Islanders, this Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series promises to be an unforgettable weekend celebrating the league and the sport of hockey.
