In an exciting turn of events, the highly anticipated heavyweight title unifier between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been given a new date. Royal adviser Turki Alalshikh, who is also the promoter for the Fury vs. Usyk fight, made the announcement during a special edition of The MMA Hour. The clash of the titans will now take place on May 18.
To ensure the fighters' commitment, Alalshikh revealed a significant incentive. If either Fury or Usyk withdraws from the fight on May 18, they will forfeit a staggering $10 million of their purse. Alalshikh made it clear that he has a guarantee from both sides, emphasizing that they are aware of the consequences of backing out.
Fury and Usyk, both present on the show, agreed to the new date, further solidifying their determination to square off in the ring. The fight remains set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as previously planned. Alalshikh confirmed that the initial event scheduled for February 17 will no longer occur.
This monumental bout will determine the undisputed heavyweight champion. Usyk, holding the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles, seeks to add Fury's WBC title to his collection. Fury, with an undefeated record of 34-0-1 and 24 KOs, aims to maintain his reign as champion and solidify his place as one of the greatest heavyweights of his era.
The rescheduling of the fight was necessitated by a bad cut sustained by Fury during training, which forced his withdrawal from the original February date. A video released after the news broke seemed to show Fury being cut by an elbow while sparring in the ring. The champ underwent 11 stitches to close the wound at a hospital.
Alalshikh, keen on verifying Fury's injury, revealed that he has a "special camera" in Fury's camp to observe his training. Usyk, seemingly unfazed by the news, continued his preparations for the fight. However, Usyk's manager, Eglis Klimas, expressed doubt, implying that Fury's cut was intentional to avoid facing Usyk.
A back-and-forth exchange between Fury and Klimas ensued, with Fury vehemently defending his commitment to the fight and expressing his desire for the biggest payday of his life. Klimas insinuated that Fury didn't want to fight Usyk previously, to which Fury fired back, reminding Klimas that Usyk had pulled out last time.
There was speculation that Usyk could still feature on the February 17 card and face mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic. However, Alalshikh clarified that Fury vs. Usyk will be rescheduled for a later date, and ticket refunds will be provided. Alalshikh announced that Hrgovic will have an opportunity to fight on the March 8 card instead.
Meanwhile, former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, who was previously set to fight Fury on March 8, wasted no time in suggesting that his fight against Anthony Joshua should be for the unified title in light of the Fury vs. Usyk rescheduling.
Additionally, Alalshikh announced that a light heavyweight title unifier between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol is slated to take place on June 1 in Riyadh, adding to the exciting lineup of high-stakes fights in Saudi Arabia.
Fans around the world eagerly await May 18 when Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will finally step into the ring to settle the score and determine the undisputed heavyweight champion.
