Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill has been arrested and charged with one misdemeanor count of aggravated domestic violence, according to the Kent County (Mich.) Sheriff's Office. The arrest came on Monday, but details surrounding the alleged incident are still limited.
According to reports from TMZ, the alleged violence occurred between Hill and his brother, resulting in "serious or aggravated injury" to the brother. The Kent County Sheriff's Department confirmed the arrest but was unable to provide further information at this time. The Kentwood Police Department, the arresting agency, has not responded to inquiries seeking additional details.
Hill's manager, Brian Butler of Sucker Punch Entertainment, released a statement on social media shortly after news of the arrest broke, maintaining his client's innocence. Butler wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), "Jamahal adamantly maintains his innocence and denies the false accusations. We will not be commenting anymore about this until the truth comes out in court."
Online records indicate that Hill is scheduled to appear in court on January 22, 2024. Until then, the specifics of the case remain undisclosed.
The 32-year-old fighter last competed in January, winning the light heavyweight title against Glover Teixeira in the main event of UFC 283. However, Hill had to vacate the title in July after suffering an Achilles tendon tear during a UFC fighters pickup basketball game in Las Vegas, coinciding with International Fight Week. It was anticipated that Hill would return to action in the first half of 2024.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Hill's future in the world of MMA remains uncertain. Fans and the MMA community will be awaiting further updates as the case continues.
