Former San Ysidro High School basketball star Mikey Williams has pleaded guilty to a single count of making criminal threats in connection with a non-injury shooting outside his Jamul home. The plea deal stipulates that if Williams successfully completes all the conditions and has no new violations, the charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor.

Williams, who is a star Memphis basketball recruit, had faced multiple felony charges after an incident that occurred on March 27. An argument at his $1.2 million home in unincorporated Jamul resulted in gunshots being fired at a car with five passengers inside. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department stated that Williams had been free on a $50,000 bond since his arrest on April 13. Testimony during his preliminary hearing revealed that Williams had made threats, leading the prosecution to add additional charges of assault with a weapon and making threats.

During the hearing, a juvenile witness testified that she and a group of friends had taken an Uber to Williams' home to meet with JJ Taylor, another basketball recruit committed to play at Memphis. The witness stated that while she went inside, Williams became angry and started making threats.

Although no witnesses saw Williams fire a gun, there was probable cause to proceed with the case based on testimony from witnesses who claimed to have seen him with a firearm and heard him threaten to kill them. Photographs of bullet holes in a Tesla Model 3 used by the five people at Williams' home were presented as evidence.

Williams, who is currently enrolled in online classes at Memphis, remains on the roster but does not have access to team facilities or activities. His status with the program will be determined once the court case is resolved.

Aside from his basketball career, Williams had also made waves in the name, image, and likeness era. He had secured a multiyear endorsement deal with Puma for an undisclosed amount in 2021. Prior to deactivating his social media accounts, Williams had amassed millions of followers across various platforms.

Williams is scheduled for sentencing on August 12, 2024, where a 10-year gun restriction will be placed on his record. The potential decades-long prison sentence that he could have received if convicted of all charges has been avoided through the plea agreement. The court will make a final determination on his future with the Memphis basketball program once the case is concluded.
