In an effort to fill the vacant defensive coordinator position, the Chicago Bears are set to interview former player Chris Harris. Known as "The Hitman," Harris had two stints with the Bears during his playing career and has since gained coaching experience with the Tennessee Titans.
According to a source, Harris, who currently serves as the defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach for the Titans, will be interviewed for the Bears' defensive coordinator job. This comes after Alan Williams resigned shortly after the first week of the 2023 regular season, and Luke Getsy was fired by Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles following the conclusion of the regular season.
Harris is no stranger to the Bears organization and Halas Hall. Having been a former draft pick of the Bears, he earned a strong reputation as a player in Chicago. Fans will remember his impressive performances at safety, where he consistently made crucial plays at critical moments. His outstanding play during the 2010 season even earned him 2nd Team All-Pro honors.
Furthermore, Harris shares a connection with certain members of the Bears' coaching staff. During his time with the Bears, he played alongside Jon Hoke, who is currently the team's cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Their relationship has remained strong over the years, adding familiarity to the potential coaching partnership.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Harris has been considered for a coaching position with the Bears. Last year, the team expressed interest in hiring him for an unspecified role. While he did not join the coaching staff at that time, he now has the opportunity to formally interview for the coveted defensive coordinator position.
As the Bears continue their search for coordinators, they have identified Chris Harris as a top candidate for the defensive coordinator role. Whether his experience as a former player and his coaching tenure with the Titans will be enough to secure the position remains to be seen. Nonetheless, Harris's interview signifies the team's dedication to finding the right fit and strengthening their defense for the future.
