Florida State quarterback Tate Rodemaker has made the decision to enter the transfer portal, according to a team source confirmation on Monday. As a result, he will not be playing in the upcoming Orange Bowl match against Georgia. This news comes after Rodemaker took over as the Seminoles' starting quarterback when Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending leg injury last month.
Rodemaker, a redshirt junior, faced a setback himself with a head injury, which sidelined him for Florida State's recent victory over Louisville in the ACC championship. In his place, freshman Brock Glenn stepped in as the starting quarterback.
Throughout Rodemaker's four-year tenure at Florida State, he has thrown for a total of 901 yards, with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. He made his first career start on November 25th, leading the Seminoles to a 24-15 win over Florida by going 12-of-25 passing for 134 yards.
Despite a strong 13-0 season, Florida State failed to qualify for the College Football Playoff. The team is set to face the Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. With Rodemaker unavailable, the Seminoles are expected to rely on Glenn as the starting quarterback against Georgia. Glenn, who started one game this season, went 8-of-21 for 55 yards during FSU's win over Louisville.
Rodemaker's decision to enter the transfer portal comes as he recognizes the need to explore his options for the future. With two more seasons of eligibility, he aims to find a program where he could potentially become a starting quarterback in 2024. The Seminoles' coaching staff has also been actively pursuing proven transfer quarterbacks, including visits from Washington State transfer Cameron Ward and Oregon State transfer DJ Uiagalelei.
However, Rodemaker's decision to make the move after the Orange Bowl could pose challenges in finding a program seeking a starting quarterback and getting enrolled on time. As of now, 46 FBS scholarship transfer quarterbacks have already committed to new schools, and the 30-day winter transfer window for underclassmen closes on January 2nd.
In the meantime, Florida State will face a tough challenge against Georgia in the Orange Bowl. The Seminoles have already seen several key players opt-out for the game, including running back Trey Benson, wide receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, tight end Jaheim Bell, defensive end Jared Verse, defensive tackle Fabien Lovett Sr., and safety Akeem Dent. Nevertheless, this presents an opportunity for Glenn and other young players in the program to showcase their skills as Florida State looks to reload and compete for another ACC title and a place in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff in 2024.
