DETROIT - The Detroit Pistons etched their names in NBA history as they became the first team to lose 27 consecutive games in a season. The record-breaking defeat came as they fell 118-112 to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena.

The monumental loss left Pistons' first-year coach Monty Williams feeling the weight of the situation. Williams, a former NBA coach of the year, acknowledged the significance of the record and expressed his desire to bring about change. "Nobody wants this kind of thing attached to them. I was brought in here to change this thing," he said.

The Pistons' previous loss to the Nets on Saturday in Brooklyn had matched the record for most consecutive losses in a single season, which was held by the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers.

However, with their latest defeat, the Pistons now hold the dubious distinction of having the longest losing streak in a season, surpassing the previous mark. Their next target is the overall record of 28 straight losses, set by the Philadelphia 76ers from late 2014 to early 2015.

The game against the Nets started with the Pistons showing some promise. They established a 9-1 lead and even led by as many as 14 points in the first quarter. However, poor shooting, defensive lapses, and turnovers allowed Brooklyn to turn the tide and extend Detroit's misery.

Despite the disappointing result, rookie sensation Cade Cunningham provided a glimmer of hope for the Pistons. The 2021 NBA draft's number one overall pick scored a remarkable 41 points, with 18 coming in the third quarter. Cunningham's efforts, including a crucial three-pointer in the final period, temporarily gave Detroit a 97-92 lead.

However, the Nets responded with a 13-0 run, snatching the momentum away from the Pistons and securing the victory. The lack of support for Cunningham and a late unforced turnover from the young star further compounded Detroit's woes.

With a road game against the formidable Boston Celtics, currently leading the NBA, the Pistons face the challenge of potentially matching or surpassing the record for consecutive losses in their next outing.

The franchise's struggles have stirred frustration among the fans. In the final minute of the game, fed-up supporters began chanting, "Sell the team! Sell the team!" Yet, Pistons owner Tom Gores was not present to hear the disgruntled chants. Gores, in a recent remote interview with reporters, expressed his apologies to the fans for the disappointing season, assuring them that changes are on the horizon while standing by Coach Williams and general manager Troy Weaver.

As the Detroit Pistons continue their quest to end their agonizing losing streak, the organization faces mounting pressure to turn their fortunes around and avoid further historic lows in the NBA.
