The Detroit Lions have begun their on-field preparations for their upcoming Wild Card round matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. As they gear up for the game, coach Dan Campbell provided an update on the team's injury situation, stating that they are in a "pretty good spot right now."
Among the players not participating in practice at the start of the week are wide receiver Kalif Raymond and tight end Sam LaPorta. Both players sustained injuries during the Week 18 game against the Vikings. However, there is cautious optimism surrounding their recovery processes, with Campbell mentioning that they are improving.
LaPorta, who is dealing with an ankle and knee injury, was observed participating in the walkthrough. Campbell stated that a clear picture of his status may not be available until Friday afternoon, but they are gradually increasing his involvement in practice. Despite the challenging nature of his injuries, there is now a possibility that LaPorta could take the field on Sunday, contrary to initial expectations.
Raymond's recovery is slightly behind LaPorta's, but Campbell reassured reporters that the injury is not as severe as it initially appeared. While the timeline is not specified, Campbell mentioned that Raymond's return could be a matter of days rather than weeks.
Additionally, the Lions have adjusted their rest days for some key offensive linemen. Center Frank Ragnow, left tackle Taylor Decker, and guard Graham Glasgow have been given periodic rest days to keep them refreshed and prevent further injuries. However, if Ragnow's condition raises concerns, the injury report on Thursday will provide more information.
Defensive back Jerry Jacobs, who did not suffer an apparent injury during the Vikings game, is limited in practice. The team will closely monitor his status as the week progresses.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams and tight end Brock Wright, who both missed the previous game, are inching closer to a return. Campbell expressed confidence in Wright's improvement, noting there has been no move to acquire a new tight end. With LaPorta's status uncertain, it appears that James Mitchell will be the only healthy tight end on the roster. Williams is not only expected to be ready for the game but also to play a significant role in the postseason.
Edge rusher James Houston, who is approaching the decision deadline regarding his status, participated in a full practice, potentially bolstering his case for playing time. However, Campbell admitted he is not as optimistic about Houston's availability compared to other players.
Defensive tackle John Cominsky, who missed the previous game due to a coaching decision, is now listed with an illness. The connection between the coaching decision and the illness is not clear at this time.
Cornerback Cameron Sutton, who played a full game last week, is expected to play on Sunday despite dealing with a new heel injury in addition to a pre-existing toe injury.
Lastly, star defensive back Brian Branch injured his wrist during the Vikings game but managed to return and complete the match. The Lions may opt for a cautious approach with Branch during practice this week to ensure he is ready to take the field over the weekend.
With several key players making progress in their recoveries, the Lions are optimistic about their chances heading into the Wild Card round against the Rams. The team will continue to monitor their injured players' progress and make necessary adjustments for a competitive matchup.
