In an effort to address their injury-plagued lineup, the Detroit Lions have made several roster moves ahead of their upcoming Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Cornerback Jerry Jacobs and tight end James Mitchell have been placed on injured reserve after sustaining injuries in practice. Jacobs suffered a lower-body injury, while Mitchell underwent surgery for a hand injury, as confirmed by a social media post from the Lions' tight end. Unfortunately, both players will be ineligible to participate in the remainder of the playoffs.
With the two vacant roster spots, the Lions have promoted four players from their practice squad, all of whom are now eligible to join the team for Sunday's crucial game.
Among the notable additions is tight end Fisker, whose signing was necessary considering the absence of Mitchell and the potential limitations of starter Sam LaPorta, who is dealing with a hyperextended knee and bone bruise. Fisker provides the Lions with additional depth at the position.
Meanwhile, Lucas, a cornerback, returns to the active roster for the second time this season. Known for his skills as a gunner, Lucas is expected to play a significant role on Sunday, providing depth both on the outside and in the nickel corner position.
Cabinda, who was called up from the practice squad last week, will likely have a similar role to the previous game, seeing limited offensive snaps at fullback and contributing on special teams.
Additionally, 36-year-old defensive tackle Alualu has been called up for the past two weeks, providing vital snaps for the Lions alongside Alim McNeill. Despite a slight decrease in playing time last week, Alualu is anticipated to play a significant role in countering the Rams' run-heavy offense.
It's important to note that according to NFL postseason rules, the Lions are only permitted to sign four free agents during the playoffs. However, the signings of Fisker and Lucas from the practice squad do not count towards that limit.
With these roster additions, the Lions hope to bolster their lineup and compensate for the injuries they have suffered. As they prepare for their Wild Card game, the team remains determined to give their best performance against the formidable Los Angeles Rams.
