In a recent episode of his "4th & 1 Podcast," former Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton didn't hold back on his criticism of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, despite Purdy leading his team to Super Bowl LVIII for the first time since 2019. Newton labeled Purdy as a "game-manager" rather than a "game-changer," and emphasized that for Purdy to earn the esteemed "game-changer" label, he must be the best offensive player on his team.
Newton made it clear that he believes the title of best offensive player on the 49ers belongs to running back Christian McCaffrey. He asserted that Purdy is far from being the 10th-best player on the team, taking into account the defensive and offensive talent surrounding him.
While acknowledging Purdy's recent success and impressive playoff performances, Newton stood firm in his belief that Purdy is not the top performer on his own team. Purdy, who earned his first Pro Bowl selection this season, has been instrumental in guiding the 49ers to the Super Bowl. In the playoffs, he has amassed 519 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and one interception, displaying consistent and efficient play that hasn't hindered his team's progress.
Nevertheless, Newton's criticism points to the support Purdy receives from star players such as McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle, which undoubtedly contributes to Purdy's success. The 49ers' comeback victory over the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship showcased Purdy's ability to rally the team when needed.
With the Super Bowl just 10 days away, Purdy will have a chance to further prove himself on the grandest stage in football. As the 49ers prepare to face their opponents at Allegiant Stadium, all eyes will be on Purdy as he aims to silence doubters and solidify his status as a true game-changer in the league.
It remains to be seen how Purdy will respond to Newton's criticism, but one thing is for certain - he has the chance to leave a lasting impact on the biggest stage of his career.
