More than a year after being put up for sale, Manchester United has announced that British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has agreed to purchase a minority stake in the renowned Premier League club. Ratcliffe, owner of petrochemicals giant INEOS and one of Britain's wealthiest individuals, will be investing $300 million in the club's historic Old Trafford stadium and acquiring a stake of up to 25%.
In addition to his financial contribution, Ratcliffe will also take on the responsibility of managing the club's soccer operations as part of the deal. Born in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, Ratcliffe had initially attempted to buy a majority share of the club from its American owners, the Glazers, who hold a stake of around 69%.
Expressing his delight in the agreement, Ratcliffe, a lifelong supporter of Manchester United, stated, "As a local boy, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree on a deal with the Manchester United Board that allows us to take charge of the football operations of the club. Our aim is to bring global knowledge, expertise, and talent from the wider INEOS Sport group to further enhance the club's performance while also providing funds for future investments in Old Trafford."
Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, Executive Co-Chairmen and Directors of the club, expressed their enthusiasm for the partnership with Ratcliffe and INEOS. They highlighted the wealth of commercial experience and significant financial commitment that Ratcliffe and INEOS bring to the table. The involvement of INEOS Sport will also grant Manchester United access to skilled high-performance professionals with expertise in building and leading successful teams.
The executive co-chairmen emphasized their dedication to continual improvement at every level of the club and their desire to deliver more success to the loyal fans of Manchester United.
With Ratcliffe's investment and his leadership in soccer operations, Manchester United aims to unlock its untapped potential and revitalize its position as a dominant force in English football. The injection of funds into Old Trafford will facilitate future investments, ensuring the club remains at the forefront of innovation and advancement.
The agreement marks an exciting new chapter for Manchester United, as Ratcliffe's involvement brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of resources that could propel the club to new heights. As fans eagerly await the upcoming Premier League season, the club's supporters are optimistic that Ratcliffe's investment and expertise will help steer Manchester United back to its former glory.
