In a thrilling week of college football action, several teams battled it out on the field to secure their spot in the upcoming bowl games. With only 13 spots remaining and 18 teams still in contention, the bubble was tense and every win mattered. Let's recap the highlights and notable performances from this action-packed week.
James Madison (11-1) and Jacksonville State (8-4) found themselves in a unique situation as FCS transition teams. They were only eligible to earn bowl bids if there weren't enough 6-6 teams. Fortunately, luck was on their side as ten teams on the bowl bubble secured wins, paving the way for both James Madison and Jacksonville State to earn their first-ever FBS bowl game appearances. The crucial victory that sealed their destinies came when Clemson knocked off rival South Carolina, solidifying their positions.
While some teams celebrated their breakthrough wins, others experienced disappointment. BYU, Central Michigan, Colorado State, Florida, Illinois, Mississippi State, Navy, Nebraska, South Carolina, TCU, and Washington State were eliminated from bowl contention after falling short in their final games of the season. Notably, the Florida Gators suffered a 24-15 home loss to Florida State, marking their third consecutive losing season. South Carolina also took a step back in Year 3 under Shane Beamer after a promising top-25 finish last year.
The Mountain West Conference witnessed a unique situation as well, with three teams - Boise State, San Jose State, and UNLV- tied atop the standings with identical 6-2 records. In the absence of a head-to-head matchup between Boise State and UNLV, the conference turned to computer rankings to determine the participants and host for the 2023 Mountain West Football Championship, with the announcement set for Sunday morning.
On the player front, standout performances and jaw-dropping catches made headlines. LSU's Malik Nabers and Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr. continued their battle for the Biletnikoff Award as they made remarkable catches. Nabers showcased his skills with six catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular toe-tapping score against Texas A&M. Harrison, on the other hand, amassed five catches for 118 yards and a touchdown, punctuated by an impressive one-handed grab on a wheel route against Michigan.
Arizona State's Troy Omeire also caught attention with his diving touchdown grab against Arizona, earning him honorable mention for his exceptional play. Meanwhile, in a game between No. 15 Arizona and rival Arizona State, Tetairoa McMillan, the go-to receiver for Arizona, had a phenomenal day with 11 catches for 266 yards and a touchdown, contributing to Arizona's sixth consecutive win and further solidifying their hot streak.
The week also featured some incredible interceptions and takeaways. Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant left spectators in awe with his one-handed interception against Cincinnati, while Chattanooga's quarterback Luke Schomburg's overthrown pass was salvaged by wide receiver Jamoi Mayes, who still managed to score a touchdown. In another remarkable play, SMU long snapper, Will Benton, capitalized on a punt that touched the towel worn by the Navy return man, resulting in a fumble recovery and a touchdown for SMU.
Lastly, the week showcased exceptional throws, including a game-winning dime from Texas quarterback Jett Bush to clinch the Longhorns' dominant win over Texas Tech. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix added to his impressive highlight reel with a cross-field throw to Troy Franklin for a 41-yard touchdown against Oregon State, while Michigan's J.J. McCarthy displayed remarkable accuracy with a 22-yard touchdown throw to Roman Wilson against Ohio State.
As the regular season comes to a close, the stage is set for the upcoming bowl games, with deserving teams securing their spots and standout players leaving their mark on the field.
