In an impressive season opener, the Wisconsin Badgers made a strong statement by scoring a Kohl Center-record 105 points against Arkansas State. The team showcased their depth, with 12 different players contributing to the score, and four players recording double-digit points.
Junior guard Chucky Hepburn led the charge with 20 points and six assists, displaying improved decision-making and versatility in his role. However, another player who has stepped up as a playmaker is junior guard Max Klesmit, who has maintained his spot in the starting lineup despite the arrival of transfer forward A.J. Storr.
Klesmit, known primarily as an off-ball player in 2022, demonstrated his ability to contribute as a scorer and facilitator in the season opener. He had a perfect shooting performance, going 5/5 from the field and scoring 14 points along with an assist.
Coach Greg Gard praised Klesmit's decision-making when placed in playmaking situations, emphasizing his patience and understanding of the game. Gard commended Klesmit's ability to read defenses, make the correct plays, and maintain a good pace.
Recognizing the increased responsibility, Klesmit dedicated his offseason to improving his handling skills in order to complement Hepburn as an on-ball guard. He highlighted the importance of providing different looks to the defense and becoming a playmaker for the team.
While Klesmit's role has expanded, it does not necessarily mean an increase in scoring opportunities. With the addition of Storr to the roster, Klesmit understands the significance of facilitating and creating opportunities for his teammates. He observed Hepburn's ability to drive to the rim and acknowledged that it opens up the floor for others to make plays and hit open shots.
Klesmit's versatility as both an on and off-ball player will be a valuable asset for the Badgers this season. He has shown the ability to score from various positions on the court, whether it be from the perimeter, off the dribble, or through off-ball movement.
In addition, Klesmit's emergence as a consistent playmaker allows the Badgers to have a more balanced and versatile lineup, preventing over-reliance on a single player. This was a challenge the team faced in the past and aims to overcome in the 2023 season.
The Badgers, narrowly missing out on the preseason Top 25, are determined to have a bounce-back season. They will face a tough test on Friday when they host the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers at the Kohl Center at 8 P.M. The game promises to showcase Klesmit's evolving role as a playmaker and the team's overall improvement and depth.
