Adam Zampa delivered a stellar performance during the middle overs as Australia eliminated the defending champions England from the ODI World Cup with a 33-run triumph on Saturday. With this win, Australia secured their fifth consecutive victory in the tournament.
Despite some missed opportunities to convert their starts, the Australian batsmen managed to post a total of 286 against their arch-rivals. Marnus Labuschagne played a crucial role, contributing his highest score of the tournament, 71 off 83 balls.
England, who had struggled throughout their title defense, had a chance to break their losing streak with four consecutive defeats. However, in the midst of heavy dew, their batting lineup fell short. Ben Stokes fought valiantly with a score of 64 off 90 balls, partnering with Dawid Malan (50 off 64) and Moeen Ali (42 off 43) to keep the chase alive. But it was Zampa who delivered the decisive blows, taking three crucial wickets and restricting England to 253 runs in 48.1 overs.
Zampa's first breakthrough came with the dismissal of England skipper Jos Buttler (1) in the deep. He then removed Stokes with a cleverly bowled short ball on the leg side, resulting in a simple catch to Marcus Stoinis at short-fine leg. England's fate was sealed when Moeen Ali's slog sweep off Zampa found its way into the hands of David Warner at deep mid-wicket.
Mitchell Starc played a key role with the ball as well, generating swing in the powerplay and claiming early wickets. He dismissed Jonny Bairstow, who edged one down the leg side, and set up Joe Root with a series of inswingers, eventually getting him to edge one outside the off-stump.
Australia's sharp fielding also contributed to their victory. Despite some missed opportunities to convert their starts, the Australian batsmen managed to set a challenging target. Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, and Marcus Stoinis all failed to capitalize on their starts. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid maintained his economy, and pacer Mark Wood effectively used the short ball.
Chris Woakes was the standout bowler for England, taking four wickets for 54 runs. He made an impact with the new ball, removing the dangerous opening duo of David Warner and Travis Head. He also struck twice in the death overs.
It appeared that Australia might not utilize their full allotment of overs, but Adam Zampa's timely cameo of 29 runs from 19 balls pushed the team close to the 300-run mark.
Australia's impressive victory over England solidifies their position in the ODI World Cup and puts them in a strong position for the remainder of the tournament. With Adam Zampa's exceptional performance and the contributions of their batsmen, Australia has emerged as a formidable force to reckon with.
