In a new development, attorneys representing pop star Taylor Swift have issued a cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action against a Florida college student named Jack Sweeney. The student runs social media accounts that track the private jet movements of celebrities and public figures, including Swift.

Sweeney confirmed to CNN that he received the letter from Swift's attorneys, who are accusing him of engaging in "stalking and harassing behavior" by consistently publishing real-time information about Swift's location and future travel plans on social media. The letter asserts that this poses an imminent threat to Swift's safety and well-being, referencing previous cases where individuals attempted to harm the singer, some of whom were armed.

Sweeney, who previously faced backlash from billionaire Elon Musk for tracking his jet travels, operates multiple accounts that track the private jet movements of other notable figures like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. While Sweeney relies on publicly-available flight data from the Federal Aviation Administration and flight signals tracked by aviation enthusiasts, he also includes estimates of carbon emissions from each flight in his posts.

The letter also mentions a previous incident involving Musk offering Sweeney $5,000 to delete the Twitter account that tracked his jet. Sweeney refused the offer, requesting $50,000 instead, stating that he could use the money for college or even to buy a Tesla.

Swift's attorneys argue that Sweeney's actions jeopardize her safety and that of others, providing potential threats with information to carry out their plans. If Sweeney continues to publish information regarding Swift's jet travels, her attorneys state that she will pursue all available legal remedies.

Sweeney maintains that he never intended any harm with his actions and claims to be compiling public information. He defends his actions as promoting transparency and public awareness.

While Swift's representatives declined to comment on the matter, a spokeswoman for Swift stated that the timing of stalkers' activities suggests a connection to Sweeney's jet-tracking accounts. She asserted that his posts provide crucial information about Swift's whereabouts.

Interest in Swift's upcoming travels, particularly regarding her potential attendance at the Super Bowl to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce, has been intensifying. Swift's ability to return from her overseas tour in time for the game has garnered attention, with the Japanese Embassy in the US even tweeting a statement suggesting that she should be able to make it to Las Vegas from Tokyo if she departs in the evening after her concert, despite the long-haul flight and time difference.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Sweeney and Swift's legal battle over his social media tracking will play out.
