In a heartfelt social media post, Joe Don Rooney, renowned guitarist for one of country music's most successful groups, Rascal Flatts, has opened up about his battle with alcoholism and addressed rumors surrounding his personal life. Rooney, who recently pleaded guilty to a DUI charge in 2021, confirmed his commitment to sobriety and categorically denied any plans to transition.

Taking to social media, Rooney expressed his gratitude for finally being in a healthy state and ready to face the world. He directly addressed the speculation about his gender identity, stating, "And NO, I'm not transitioning to be a woman. That thought has never entered my mind. Nothing against the trans community whatsoever but I needed to set the record straight."

The post provided a glimpse into Rooney's journey towards recovery, particularly after the fateful car accident that changed his life. Detailing the incident, he revealed, "My life and career took a major detour at 4a in the early morning hours of Sep 9, 2021, when I ran square into a tree and about killed myself." Admitting that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time, Rooney confessed to feeling out of control and overwhelmed by his fears, depression, and anxieties.

Rooney attributed his decision to seek help and turn his life around to the car wreck. Following the accident, he spent four months in a treatment facility in Utah for alcoholism. Initially reluctant to stay, Rooney shared his journey of overcoming shame and guilt, and his gradual understanding of treatment and the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) approach. On Jan. 13, he celebrated 28 months of sobriety.

The Rolling Stone reported in 2022 that Rooney was sentenced to two days in jail and had his license revoked as a result of the DUI conviction. However, the remaining 11 months and 27 days of his sentence were suspended. Notably, the incident occurred amidst Rascal Flatts' plans for a farewell tour that was ultimately canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Joe Don Rooney's musical achievements with Rascal Flatts are noteworthy, as the band reached massive commercial success in the 2000s with hits such as "I Melt," "Bless the Broken Road," "What Hurts the Most," and their cover of Tom Cochrane's "Life Is a Highway." Alongside bandmates Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus, Rooney solidified their place in country music history.

With his social media post, Joe Don Rooney has offered transparency and vulnerability, shedding light on his personal struggles and triumphs. The country music community and fans alike continue to support him on his journey towards lasting sobriety and renewed well-being.
