Rap mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is currently facing a new wave of sexual assault lawsuits, with a third woman coming forward to accuse him of rape. The latest complaint alleges that in 1990 or 1991, Combs, alongside singer-songwriter Aaron Hall, took turns assaulting the woman and her friend.
Combs' representative has vehemently denied these claims, calling them "fabricated" and motivated by financial gain. According to the representative, these allegations are baseless and conveniently surfaced after an extensive period of time had passed. They assert that Combs is being unfairly targeted by anonymous accusers seeking monetary compensation.
These recent lawsuits come as the deadline for the New York Adult Survivors Act looms. This legislation allows survivors of sexual assault to file lawsuits even after the statute of limitations has expired. The act recognizes the impact of trauma on survivors and takes into account the potential delay in coming forward.
Notably, several other high-profile individuals, including Jamie Foxx and Axl Rose, are also facing sexual assault lawsuits under the same act. Both Foxx and Rose have firmly denied the allegations made against them.
The latest lawsuit, filed by a woman identified as Jane Doe, alleges that she and her friend attended a New York event hosted by a record company where they encountered Combs and Hall. Throughout the night, the two men allegedly offered the women drinks and eventually invited them back to Hall's apartment. According to Jane Doe, she was coerced into engaging in sexual activity with Combs.
Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that a few days after the incident, Combs visited Jane Doe's home and became violent, fearing that her friend would disclose their actions. The plaintiff alleges that she confided in close friends and family about the incident and sought medical treatment to cope with the trauma inflicted upon her.
This marks the third sexual assault lawsuit filed against Combs this month alone. One of the earlier lawsuits, brought by Joi Dickerson-Neal, alleges that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1991, rendering her physically incapacitated. Combs' spokesperson, however, maintains that these allegations lack credibility and are merely an attempt to extort money.
Last week, Combs settled the first sexual assault lawsuit filed by his former partner Cassie. The R&B singer accused Combs of rape and sex trafficking, alleging a decade-long pattern of abuse starting when she was 19 and he was 37. Combs has consistently denied these claims, and his decision to settle was not an admission of guilt, according to his lawyer.
As these cases unfold, there is heightened attention on the impact of the New York Adult Survivors Act, which has provided survivors with the opportunity to seek justice even decades after an alleged assault. These high-profile lawsuits underscore the significance of acknowledging and addressing the trauma faced by survivors, while also emphasizing the need for due process in evaluating the veracity of the claims made against individuals in the public eye.
