Netflix has premiered its latest must-see film, "Society of the Snow," which tells the harrowing true story of the 1970s plane crash in the Andes. Directed by J.A Bayona, the movie has already garnered attention as Spain's official entry for the Oscars and has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Golden Globes.

Based on Pablo Vierci's 2009 book, which recounts the experiences of the 16 survivors, the film takes viewers back to the tragic events of 13 October 1972. It follows the ill-fated journey of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which was en route from Montevideo, Uruguay to Santiago, Chile.

With 42 passengers on board, the plane descended prematurely, crashing into a mountain and severing both wings and the tail. The wreckage then slid down a glacier, coming to rest in the snow. The resulting disaster claimed the lives of 26 people, leaving the remaining survivors with a grim struggle for survival that included resorting to cannibalism to stay alive. It took an astonishing 72 days for rescue and search efforts to locate them.

The movie recreates the chilling tale on location at the actual crash site, situated approximately 12,000 feet above sea level in the Valley of Tears. To capture the authenticity and harsh conditions of the environment, temperatures plunging as low as -40°C were experienced during filming.

Prior to production, director J.A. Bayona visited the crash site, recalling his awe-inspiring experience. "It was amazing to visit the Valley of Tears - in the same place and at the same time of year as the crash," he shared with Netflix.

"Society of the Snow" has struck an emotional chord with viewers, who have taken to social media to share their reactions. Some commended the film's practical effects and lauded it as one of the standout films of the year. Others emphasized its intense storytelling, incredible performances, and its ability to move audiences to tears.

With its gripping narrative and powerful portrayal of survival, determination, and the indomitable human spirit, "Society of the Snow" is set to captivate audiences around the world. The film is now available for streaming on Netflix, offering a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience displayed by those who faced unimaginable hardships in the face of tragedy.
