Streaming service Max, backed by Warner Bros. Discovery, has announced the cancellation of its comedy series "Our Flag Means Death" after a two-season run. The show, created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby and executive producer Taika Waititi, will not move forward with a third season.
A Max spokesperson expressed pride in the "joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories" brought to life by creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, and the rest of the cast and crew. The statement also thanked the dedicated fans who embraced the show and contributed to its inclusive community.
The decision to wrap up "Our Flag Means Death" comes after Waititi's other project, "Reservation Dogs," concluded in 2023. Additionally, Waititi's FX comedy "What We Do in the Shadows" is set to conclude later this year with its sixth season. Waititi's next TV endeavor will be the Apple series "Time Bandits," featuring Lisa Kudrow.
"Our Flag Means Death" received high praise for its queer storylines, earning a remarkable 94 percent score among critics and a 93 percent rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, aired in March 2022. The show was then renewed for a shortened eight-episode second season, which concluded in October.
On Tuesday, creator David Jenkins expressed his sadness about the show's cancellation, acknowledging the strong bonds formed among the cast and crew. Despite the disappointment, Jenkins expressed gratitude for the opportunity to "captain the damn thing" in the first place.
Among its comedy offerings, Max recently renewed Chuck Lorre's "Bookie" for a second season and announced that the third season of "Hacks" will arrive in the spring. Max's comedy lineup also includes shows like "And Just Like That," "Rap Shit," and "The Sex Lives of College Girls," among others.
