In a recent interview on "The View," award-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis shared that her Oscar statue, which she won in 2023 for her role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," resides in her home office. But what makes her statue unique is that it has been "de-gendered," with no genitalia depicted on it.
The discussion arose when co-host Sunny Hostin mentioned how co-host Whoopi Goldberg had brought in her own Oscar, prompting the hosts to pose with it as if they had won the prestigious award. Curious about the whereabouts of Curtis' Oscar, Hostin asked, "It's been a year, where do you keep it?"
Curtis responded, "It lives in my house, I have de-gendered it. I have a trans daughter, and there is no genitalia on it, so it lives in my office. And I put a googly eye, for the homage to 'Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,' and I put a they-them button to just make sure anyone coming in understood."
Acknowledging the significance of Curtis' decision, Hostin commented, "Well, the Oscar is they-them."
Curtis had announced back in March 2023 that she would assign they-them pronouns to her Oscar as a tribute to her daughter. During a media appearance at the time, she proudly lifted the statuette, exclaiming, "Here they are! In support of my daughter Ruby, I'm having them be a they/them."
The actress expressed her gratitude for this unexpected accomplishment, stating, "They are doing great, and they're settling in. In my life, I never thought in a million years that I would have these couple of days, and I'm very moved by the whole thing."
Curtis' portrayal of Deirdre Beaubeirdre in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" earned her the recognition as Best Supporting Actress, contributing to the film's overall success in winning Best Picture and several other prestigious awards.
Aside from her cinematic achievements, Curtis has also used her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. At the red-carpet Out100 Celebration in November, where she received the "Advocate of The Year" award, Curtis passionately called out conservatives, accusing them of promoting "homophobia and transphobia" in the name of religion.
In her speech, Curtis highlighted the importance of challenging these harmful ideologies, stating, "I pray that the homophobia and transphobia that is being championed in the name of religion by the right is exposed and silenced as wrong by the love of humanity that is the center of our gay and our trans community."
As she addressed the gathering, Curtis expressed gratitude for those fighting for equality, acknowledging the times we live in as "very dangerous" and stating, "I'm very happy to be in a room with people who are fighting the best fight they can fight."
Jamie Lee Curtis' decision to embrace gender neutrality with her Oscar and her unwavering advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance in society.
