Two contestants of the new Netflix series Squid Game: The Challenge are reportedly considering legal action over injuries they claim to have suffered during filming. The health concerns primarily revolve around the first challenge of the game show, "Red Light, Green Light," with allegations of hypothermia among the injuries.
According to David Slade, an accident specialist with Express Solicitors, at least two contestants felt unwell after being required to remain motionless for extended periods in cold temperatures during the challenge. This resulted in one contestant suffering from hypothermia. Slade also noted that there were concerns about the green uniforms provided to the contestants not adequately protecting them from the chilly conditions.
Express Solicitors stated, "From what we've been told, they pushed the boundaries of safety in the name of entertainment." They emphasized the importance of ensuring health and safety standards are not compromised during production.
The first round of competition took place at Cardington Studios in Bedford, England. Netflix's fan-focused website, Tudum, reported that temperatures on set were very cold, with measures taken to distribute hand warmers and provide heaters in tented areas for contestants to warm up during breaks.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for the show expressed, "We take the welfare of our contestants extremely seriously."
Earlier this year, Netflix confirmed that three individuals received medical treatment while filming the show but denied the severity of the injuries. In a statement to CNN, Netflix emphasized their commitment to health and safety, stating that claims of serious injury were untrue.
The reality competition, inspired by the South Korean hit series Squid Game, captivated audiences globally. Contestants participate in a series of children's games, with the chance to win a record-breaking jackpot of $4.56 million – the largest cash prize offered in game show history.
The first five episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge premiered last week, with the remaining four scheduled for release this Wednesday. Express Solicitors has announced their intention to reach out to other contestants who may have experienced injuries during the filming of the show.
As the legal action unfolds, both Netflix and the production team of Squid Game: The Challenge will face scrutiny regarding the safety measures implemented during filming and the welfare of the contestants involved.
