In a subtle but telltale sign of disapproval, Bowen Yang recently took to Instagram to share his thoughts on Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley's surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) this past weekend. Posting a photo of a note addressed to Haley that read, "Welcome to Studio 8H! From, Lorne + everyone at SNL," Yang added a seemingly sarcastic caption, "everyone! :)" indicating his lack of enthusiasm for Haley's cameo compared to SNL boss Lorne Michaels.
Haley's appearance on SNL took place during a sketch parodying a CNN Town Hall, where she playfully jabbed at former President Donald Trump, portrayed by cast member James Austin Johnson. The segment concluded with host Ayo Edebiri "confronting" Haley over her slavery gaffe, albeit mostly providing cover for her to move on from the controversy.
However, Yang's apparent distaste for Haley's cameo hints at a larger issue at SNL, as the show continues to welcome divisive figures into its studio. Yang notably distanced himself from Dave Chappelle during the January 27 episode, physically positioning himself away from the controversial comedian who received backlash for his perceived transphobic jokes. Chappelle made an unexpected appearance onstage, despite not hosting or participating in any sketches that night. Yang, who is openly gay, stood unsmiling on the far opposite side of the stage during Chappelle's presence.
This past weekend's episode on February 3 introduced comedian Shane Gillis as the upcoming host, despite his past dismissal from SNL for using racist and homophobic slurs. In 2019, Gillis was initially announced as a featured player alongside Yang, who became SNL's first Chinese American cast member. However, Gillis faced immediate backlash and was fired shortly after videos surfaced of him using racist slurs, including anti-Asian remarks, on his podcast.
Now, Gillis is set to host the February 24 episode of SNL, alongside musical guest 21 Savage. While Yang has not commented on Gillis' hosting gig, some viewers believe it's likely he is not thrilled about it, given their past history.
SNL's recent choices of controversial guests and hosts have sparked discussions regarding the show's responsibility in addressing sensitive topics and fostering inclusivity. As the show navigates through these complexities, it remains to be seen how the upcoming episodes will unfold and if further reactions from Yang and other cast members will emerge.
While SNL continues to be a platform for timely satire and commentary, it is clear that the show's invitation of divisive figures has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations about the line between edgy humor and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
