Actress Anne Hathaway recently opened up about the oppressive aging standards faced by women in Hollywood. In an interview with Porter magazine, the 41-year-old star of "The Devil Wears Prada" shared her experience of being told that her career would decline after turning 35.
Reflecting on her early years in the industry, Hathaway revealed, "When I started out as a child, I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face."
Despite these discouraging expectations, Hathaway commended the women who have conquered the unfair demands of the industry and achieved success as they grew older. She noted the positive shift towards more women having lasting careers. "The thing that has evolved during [that time] is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic," the Academy Award winner remarked.
Highlighting the issue of reduced work opportunities for women as they age, Hathaway emphasized that this challenge is not exclusive to her but is widespread in Hollywood. "Obviously, it doesn't mean we should have a ticker tape parade - someone said this to me the other day: 'There's so much to be proud of and there's so much to fix,'" she added.
This isn't the first time Hathaway has spoken about the prejudices she has faced in the industry. In January, while attending the Sundance Film Festival following the premiere of her film "Eileen," she recalled a disturbing incident from her early career. At just 16 years old, she had been asked by a journalist, "Are you a good girl or a bad girl?" This incident highlights the objectification and labeling often faced by young actresses in the industry.
Hathaway's candid remarks shed light on the pervasive ageism and sexism that permeate Hollywood. Her willingness to speak out against these issues serves as a powerful reminder that the industry must address these systemic problems and offer equal opportunities for women of all ages.
As more influential figures like Hathaway continue to challenge unfair stereotypes and expectations, Hollywood is gradually moving towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
