Actor Richard Romanus Dies at Age 80

The news of his death was confirmed by his son, Robert, to The Hollywood Reporter. Richard Romanus breathed his last at a hospital in Volos, Greece, on December 23. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
Throughout his illustrious career, Richard Romanus portrayed a wide range of rugged characters that left a lasting impact on audiences. He notably played Richard LaPenna in the acclaimed television series "The Sopranos" from 1999 to 2002. His other notable roles include Michael Longo in "Mean Streets" (1973) and Harry Canyon in the animated film "Heavy Metal" (1981).
In addition to his appearances on the big screen, Richard Romanus also graced various television series such as "Mission: Impossible" (1989), "Strike Force" (1991-1982), "Hawaii Five-O" (1968), and "Foul Play" (1981).
Richard Romanus is survived by his son, Robert Romanus, whom he shared with his first wife, actress and singer Tina Bohlmann. The couple were married in 1967 and divorced in 1985. Richard's younger brother, Robert Romanus, who gained fame for his role in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," also mourns the loss. Richard later married Anthea Sylbert, an Oscar-nominated costume designer, in August 1985.
Richard Romanus and Anthea Sylbert relocated to Skiathos, Greece, over two decades ago. During their time on the picturesque island, they collaborated on writing and producing two telefilms for Lifetime, namely "Giving Up the Ghost" (1998) and "If You Believe" (1999). Their contributions and dedication to Skiathos were acknowledged when they became honorary citizens of the island in 2021.
Not limited to his acting ventures, Richard Romanus showcased his writing talents with several books set in Greece. His works include "Chrysalis" (2011), "Matoula's Echo" (2014), and the memoir "Act III: A Small Island in the Aegean" (2011).
Richard Romanus leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and an enduring love for Greece. His contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered and cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
