In a surprising turn of events, renowned actor Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly withdrawn from an upcoming film directed by Todd Haynes, leaving the production team in turmoil. Phoenix, famous for his mesmerizing performances, was set to star in an untitled gay romance film, which he himself had pitched to Haynes. Filming was scheduled to commence in Guadalajara, Mexico, in just five days when Phoenix made the unexpected decision to drop out.
Christine Vachon, the producer working on the project under the Killer Films production banner, took to Facebook to address the situation, describing it as a "nightmare." Although specific reasons for Phoenix's departure have not been revealed, Vachon confirmed that a version of the reported events did occur. The Hollywood Reporter, however, stated that Phoenix's role will not be recast, and details surrounding the decision remain unclear.
The film, set in the 1930s, was slated to explore a passionate love story between two individuals. Joining Phoenix was co-lead Danny Ramirez, known for his roles in "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Top Gun: Maverick." Vachon's Facebook post also addressed the ongoing debate surrounding casting choices for LGBTQ+ characters, urging people not to chastise the production team as it was Phoenix who initiated the project.
Prior to this setback, Phoenix had been actively involved in other film projects. He recently wrapped up filming "Eddington," a black comedy western directed by Ari Aster, with an official release date yet to be announced. Additionally, audiences can soon expect to see him in "Joker: Folie à Deux," alongside Lady Gaga, the highly anticipated sequel to the award-winning film that earned Phoenix his first Academy Award.
With Vachon's comments and preceding reports, it appears that Todd Haynes' romance movie may no longer proceed as planned. The ultimate fate of the film remains uncertain, and it remains to be seen if Phoenix's team will provide any statement regarding his withdrawal. Fans eagerly awaiting Phoenix's on-screen presence can catch "Joker: Folie à Deux," set to hit theaters on October 4th.
