The beloved cast of "Back to the Future" has reunited, not for a new film, but to search for a significant piece of the movie’s history that vanished nearly four decades ago. An active hunt is on for the cherry red Gibson ES-345 guitar prominently featured in the 1985 classic during the memorable "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance scene.
Efforts to find the guitar started back in 1989 during the production of the sequel but led nowhere. Now, in a new video released by the Gibson guitar company, Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Harry Waters Jr. have come together to ask fans and collectors for help in locating the iconic instrument. "It's somewhere lost in the space-time continuum," Fox remarked. Lloyd, echoing his character Doc Brown, chimed in saying, "The guitar has been lost to the future."
"Back to the Future," which won an Academy Award and began a highly successful franchise, features Fox as Marty McFly, a teenager who accidentally travels 30 years into the past. With the help of the eccentric Doc Brown, McFly must repair the timeline and secure his future. The search for the guitar coincides with efforts to celebrate the movie's forthcoming 40th anniversary.
Gibson has initiated a tip line and is producing a documentary titled "Lost to the Future," which will document the quest for the guitar and explore the enduring legacy of the film. Expressing his passion, Fox said in a Gibson press release, "Guitar has always been a big part of my life. I just love the guitar, and I love the movie."
Bob Gale, the co-creator of the movie, stated, "Since we don't have a functioning time machine, this effort is probably our best chance to solve a decades-long mystery."
The cast’s heartfelt plea and Gibson’s efforts may just lead to the rediscovery of this cherished piece of cinema history.
