In the latest quarterly rankings of the Henley Passport Index, six countries have emerged as the most powerful passports, offering visa-free travel to an impressive 194 out of 227 destinations. Four EU member states, namely Spain, Germany, France, and Italy, now join Singapore and Japan in sharing the crown for the number one passport.
This marks a shift in dominance, as Singapore and Japan have held the top positions for the past five years. In second place, countries such as South Korea, Finland, and Sweden provide their passport holders with visa-free access to 193 destinations.
Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, and Austria secure the third spot in the rankings. The United Kingdom has made a significant jump, rising two ranks to reach fourth place. Meanwhile, Australia and New Zealand take up the sixth position, while the United States retains its seventh place standing.
The Henley Passport Index, a renowned global passport ranking that has been conducted for 19 years, relies on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The ranking is based on the number of destinations that can be accessed without a prior visa.
Christian H. Kaelin, the chairman of Henley & Partners, highlighted a positive trend towards increased travel freedom. Over the years, the average number of visa-free destinations that travelers can access has nearly doubled, rising from 58 in 2006 to an impressive 111 in 2024.
However, Kaelin noted that there is still a significant global mobility gap, with the top-ranked passports providing access to 166 more destinations compared to the lowest-ranked passport, Afghanistan, which only grants access to 28 countries.
The Henley Passport Index report also highlighted noteworthy improvements in mobility among certain countries. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has seen the most significant climb in the rankings over the past decade. The UAE has jumped from the 55th position in 2014 to a commendable 11th position presently.
Additionally, Ukraine and China have each climbed two ranks in the past year, with China securing the 62nd spot and Ukraine rising to 32nd place.
Overall, the Henley Passport Index for 2024 showcases the powerhouses of global travel, with countries granting their passport holders the freedom to explore and experience the world without the hassle of visa requirements.
